Recycling Steel From Cars

Recycling has become a pervasive practice these days. People recycle and reuse different types of materials. And, automobile recycling is a common practice globally. The past few years have shown a prominent growth in the auto recycling industry. The trend of reusing car parts has increased.

There are auto recyclers and auto dismantlers which remove the functional parts and sell them in the market. Parts that are damaged and can’t be reused are recycled for different types of applications. Various fluids in the car are also recycled. Fluids that can’t be recycled are disposed of without adversely affecting the environment. The metallic portion which is mostly steel is crushed into a small chunk and then shred. The shredded steel is reused.

Steel is required in a lot of areas. But manufacturing steel is an elaborate process using up many of our natural resources. If steel is recycled from cars, it will greatly reduce the need to manufacture new steel which in turn will benefit the environment.

Let us see some of the major benefits of recycling steel:

Conserves iron ore

Most automobiles have a frame of steel. Manufacturing steel for cars entails the use of large amounts of iron ore. Hence, recycling steel from damaged cars directly reduces the amount of iron ore used for making steel.

Reduces coal used

Reusing steel directly reduces the coal consumption. This is because coal is needed for refining iron ore for production of steel.

Limestone is conserved

Reduction in steel production reduces the quantity of limestone used. This is because limestone is essential for mining coal.

Energy efficient

The process of melting and re-molding the available steel saves more energy than the process generation of steel from iron ore. Manufacturing steel entails transporting iron ore to a refinery and using very  large amounts of energy for steel creation.

Reduction in Greenhouse gases

Coal burning plants used for steel manufacture are one of the largest contributors towards greenhouse gases which are harmful to the atmosphere. Recycling steel drastically reduces the number of these gases being released into the atmosphere.

Reduces landfill

If a car is just abandoned and not recycled, it will occupy space in a junkyard or landfill. Effective recycling reduces the landfill to a large extent.

Recycling auto parts and steel is beneficial to the environment in the long run. It saves the fossil fuels used, reduces the usage of ores. It also helps reduce the greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere.

Thus, we see that reusing steel from cars saves time, energy, money, and of course the environment!
